GABA was formed on January 15, 2003 as a non-profit,
non-governmental organization with the purpose of fostering transatlantic trade between Germany
and the U.S. The organization was originally formed by six founding board members in order to
fill the void which was created by the liquidation of the German American Chamber of Commerce
of the Western United States. Soon GABA extended its reach beyond Silicon Valley, and today is
recognized as a key player by the thriving German/ American business community.

The success of GABA is based on its matrix-organization consisting of four locations and over
10 interest groups. The opening of GABA's first branch in Southern California in September 2003
was quickly followed by chapters in Munich and Berlin. In addition to GABA's local presence, the
board purposefully implemented interest groups which provide deep market knowledge and support
excellent industry networking opportunities. The first interest group, the Semiconductor Interest
Group, was established immediately upon GABA's formation in early 2003 and set an example for those
that followed. GABA now has a wide variety of interest groups spanning from Automotive to Young
From its modest beginnings with less than a handful of founding Board members, the organization
has grown to be a trusted partner in transatlantic knowledge-sharing and networking among
German-American and Californian businesses with 350 members and a community in the thousands.
Today, GABA facilitates more than 60 events per year, hosting over 3500 event attendees in 2011.
